Lopez Family Medals

Welcome!

Taekwondo is a passion for the entire Lopez family with Steven, his younger brother Mark, and sister, Diana, all competing at the elite level. Steven, Mark, and Diana made history when they each won gold at the 2005 World Taekwondo Championships in Madrid, becoming the first three siblings in any sport to claim World Championship titles at the same event. They again made history in 2008 becoming the first trio of American siblings to qualify for the same Olympic Games since 1904 and being joined by their older brother Jean, they became the first family to have four siblings on the same Olympic team. Jean coached Mark to a silver medal and Diana and Steven to a bronze medal. This also made U.S. Olympic history by being the first three siblings to medal at the same Olympic Games. They are all now focused on returning to the Olympic mat as a family at the 2012 Games in London.

Now learn all about their story in: Family Power The True Story of How the "First Family of Taekwondo" Made Olympic History

As the family who made history at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, with three siblings on the same U.S. Olympic Team and a fourth as their coach, the Lopezes showed the world that discipline, dedication, determination, strength and a family that loves one another can conquer all. Mark took the silver medal and Steven and Diana both brought home the bronze, with big brother Jean bursting with pride for the siblings he coached to victory. Here, for the first time, is the inspiring story of a family united by a dream.

In 1972, Julio Lopez and his wife, Ondina, emigrated from Nicaragua to New York, before settlling in Sugar Land, Texas, hoping for a sweeter life for their family and a piece of the American dream. Julio enrolled his eldest boy, Jean, in taekwondo classes to teach him self-confidence, respect and discipline. By age twelve, Jean had a black belt. Soon his younger siblings were emulating him. In an atmosphere of love, support, mutual respect and healthy competition, the siblings trained hard, daring to dream they might reach the pinnacle of their athletic field, the Olympic Games. In 2000 and 2004, Steven won the Olympic gold medal. Then came the victories and history for the four siblings in 2008.

Told in turn by Mark, Steven, Diana and Jean, this is the incredible story of how one family's boundless determination and rock-solid support system helped them make history as the first family ever to have four siblilngs on the same U.S. Olympic delegation. For the Lopez family, there's only on thing sweeter than winning the medals-sharing them.

"We found strength and perspective in something bigger than each of us...We made history in Beijing, but we built it long before we arrived. It's amazing how high you can reach when you stand on the shoulders of someone you love...We succeeded. Our dreams came true...We're still the same people, only now we have made Olympic history. We're still the same family." - From Family Power.
